Sandberg has real drive to succeed

You might say Sandberg Trucking, Inc., of Evansville wrote its own success story by helping the mail get through.
In 1981, James Sandberg practically built a delivery truck from spare parts.
Today, with 100 drivers and nearly that many vehicles, Sandberg Trucking services 25 U.S. Postal Service contracts and delivers the mail in eight states, The company recently marked a milestone by moving the company's office from the Sandbergs' Evansville home to a location in a commercial/industrial park on North Cullen Avenue, off Morgan Avenue.
Sandberg's drivers carry the mail between major cities, such as Indianapolis, Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and St. Louis plus many stops in between.
They aren't long-haul, overnight drivers, however. They're are home every night, Sandberg noted.
The drivers head out with their trucks and switch loads with other drivers coming in their direction.
Financing to purchase the Cullen Avenue building was provided by a business expansion loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) 504 program, according to Guy Johnson of the Indiana Statewide Certified Development Corp. The loan was made by German American Bank and the statewide certified development group.
Johnson said the loan was one of 66 projects that received a total of more than $37.5 million in funding through this fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30.
The amount was a record for the Indiana Statewide CDC, he said.
The SBA guarantees bonds that are sold to finance a portion of the loan, which allows the statewide group to offer a low, fixed interest rate for as long as 20 years, said Jean Wojtowicz, executive director of the Indiana Statewide CDC.
The guarantee also allows borrowers to pay as little as 10 percent down.
The interest rate and down payment stipulations are better than those provided by conventional loans, said Wojtowicz.
